Imagine the possibility of everyday being your last. People able to murder one another, no government or law to stop them. A city torn down from natural disaster and raids, then only place still modern and clean is in the centre. A building where the only 'officials' are.

This is how Gemma lives. The constant thought of having a bullet sent through her skull looming in her mind. But one night every month is when things are truly a-wire. At 6pm, it comes out of it's home and fills it's stomach. People have the option of going into the very, very secure and impossible-to-break-into building. But that also means that everyone else in the building has the option to kill you. A risk either way, but always no way to escape.

This all started when Gemma was a young, thoughtless girl, and all of this slipped right past her. That is, until she had a confrontation with it. She witnessed it's special feeding ceremony on her mother, father, and older sister. It came up and faced her, but instead of seeing hunger in it's eyes, Gemma saw hopelessness and sorrow.

Gemma didn't think it had feelings, or that it was barely even a living creature, but the painful truth behind it comes out during one of the not-so-average monthly cycles. Will Gemma get the last shot, or will someone else shoot her before she has the chance to uncover the truth of the helpless 'it'?
