After years of thieving, Levi is finally caught and given a choice. Lose a hand or travel north, to a land where winter is perpetual and men in black patrol a wall of ice. He soon learns that he won't be travelling alone. Erwin Lannister, a young lord, seems set on joining the Night's Watch. Despite his reluctance, Levi finds himself drawn to the young man and his unyielding sense of duty. Forced to adapt to this new way of life, Levi must learn who he can trust and who will become his enemy. A life of crime left little respect in him for authority, but with his life on the line, failure to obey could result in a bloody, lonely death. Will he climb the ranks and earn a place of respect within the Watch, or will he perish like so many nameless men? Death is inevitable, and life seems to have little meaning. But by the side of Erwin, Levi begins to realise that he might find value in it nonetheless.
