When Kayse is offered freedom -- an escape from the confines of exile in return for her soul -- she eagerly accepts. In return for her loyal servitude to her mentor, Roxanne, she is equipped with power and knowledge beyond all human measure. Despite Roxanne's eccentric nature, everything goes smoothly until the day Kayse is ordered to use her powers to get information about the town's hermit: a troubled composer named Rafael. Strange, cloaked men haunt the shadows after years of silence, directly interested in Rafael and his music, and Roxanne wants to know why. Kayse is sent off with an order: do not come back until you know what the men are after. Only, things begin to go very awry. Kayse soon finds herself in the middle of things, wrapped up in a power-hungry war between the cloaked men and Roxanne. Both want Rafael's haunting compositions, and the more Kayse pries for information, the more she realizes their very lives might be at risk . . . and that the price for the freedom she sought wasn't worth being paid, after all.
