Juliet Wingate is the mistress of Easton Court, seat of the Earls of Eastonbury. However, she is not a Wingate herself; she is merely the older half-sister of the heir, her brother Jeremy, who leaves the estate's precarious financial situation in her hands as he goes off to Oxford in order to game, whore, and drink. Juliet knows that when Jeremy marries, he will get rid of her. And in the meantime, it is all she can do to prevent him from ruining the only stable home she has ever known. Enter the Marquess of Rotherfield...grave, scholarly, and determined to teach the reckless young Jeremy a lesson about character and honor. What will he do when he realizes that carrying through on his plans will involve the ruin of the woman he now loves?
