"I can't," I say. I choke on my words.
I look between them as I feel overwhelmed with grief. I am crying so hard that I have to bite my lip till I taste blood.
In an instant, his cold blistered hands ram into my shoulders and he shoves me back against the crisp brick wall. His breath blows deeply across my cheek. "Choose."
I turn feverishly back to them as the man wipes the hair from my mouth. He ticks his gun between the two and stares at me with fury in his eyes.
"Payback's a bitch, isn't it?" His voice is lower and deeper as the moments flash by in a never-ending static state. This one twenty-second moment feels like an eternity as I look back to the man's blue eyes. "Now choose."
The bullet bolts from the gun and barrels through the sky . . .
One bullet, one life, one second. I close my eyes. I don't want to see what happened.
