Alara Edge is a seventeen year old girl living in a far from perfect society.

When a trip to a power plant goes awry, she and her classmates are exposed to unknown airborne material. Since then, Alara has felt strange even though there is nothing physically wrong with her. By accident, she realizes that she has powers that cannot be explained. Before she can figure out why and how, she, along with everyone else exposed, is taken to a research facility to be "observed."
