She attends a new school her Junior year at Rockcliff High School. She has a little trouble "fitting in" with her classmates. She tries to blend in and not be noticed,
She ends up making a small circle of friends, but Kent the school bad boy picks on Valerie endlessly. And with the odds in Valerie's favor Kent happens be to be her next door neighbor.

Eventually her step mom is diagnosed with lung cancer and doesn't have long to live.
