After the fall of the Dark Emperor, the Shadow Hunters of Valladia suffered heavy losses. Raven Darkmoon, now the headmaster of Westcross' Darkmoon Academy, begins training a new breed of Shadow Hunter. With the help of old friends and family, he singles out Tai Leroane, a mouthy 12-year-old brat and invites him to attend. However, Raven's attempts to teach the boy patience are repeatedly thwarted by the child's headstrong ways. Just as Raven thinks he might be talking some sense into him, Tai is forced into a terrible situation by a mysterious stranger who has left a trail of dead children from Lexford all the way to Westcross.
