We had to savour our moments of blithe and extend them out for as long as we could. It was one of the few things that we would be able to hold onto, that the Hunger Games and the Capitol and President Snow would never be able to take away from us.
Our love. Our happiness. And our hope.

It's time for the 66th Annual Hunger Games, and 15-year-old Toni Abbot of District 1 is absolutely dreading it. Not because she believes she is incapable of winning -- no, she knows otherwise -- but because she despises the Games, loathes the Capitol, and is appalled by President Snow, the man who runs the country of Panem and relishes in each year's dreadful Hunger Games. Where 24 tributes go into the arena -- two from each of the twelve Districts, one boy and one girl, from the ages of 10 through 18 -- and one one exits as a victor.

Toni is determined to win the Games, but one thing sets her back. Or, rather, two people. One 10-year-old boy whom she has loved as a brother and a friend since the day he was born, and one 17-year-old boy who she meets on the night of the opening ceremonies of the Games and immediately decides to be friends with. Both of them are there with her, in the arena. She fights every moment not just to keep herself alive, but to keep them alive, too. She loves them both too much to let them die, and she absolutely refuses to even think for a second about killing them herself. She just can't do it.

So Toni finds herself at a dire crossroads; which path she will choose to take, even she has no idea. But eventually, at the very last possible moment, everything will fall into place. Except for the things that are broken or left behind, that is. She wonders without really knowing that she is if her heart will ever be one of them.

Book One of the Timber Series. In the rugged woodlands of District 7, fate dramatically alters the lives of Hazel Marlowe and her younger brother when they are both selected during the reaping for the 15th Annual Hunger Games. The historic selection of siblings in the same games, quickly captivates the Capitol, drawing a morbid fascination from its citizens. Senator Coriolanus Snow, ambitious apprentice Gamemaker under the notorious Dr. Gaul, has his eyes set on the presidency. Determined to make this year's Games unforgettable, he sees a unique opportunity in Hazel's tragic story. As Hazel fights to protect her brother, she must also contend with Snow's mysterious behavior. It isn't long before she realizes that the Hunger Games isn't the only game being played. ~ The intensity of his scrutiny felt like a physical weight, pressing against her with an almost suffocating force. Then his piercing stare softened into a smile, one so well-crafted and timed it seemed nothing less than a rehearsed performance. She was walking a fine line by challenging a man who held her and her brother's fate in his elegantly gloved palms. With long strides, he closed the distance between them. His gloved hand took hers. The softness of his touch clashed violently with the dread coiling in her stomach. He leaned closer, the warmth of his breath against her ear contradicted the chill his presence invoked as he whispered, "Be careful, Miss Marlowe." ⚠️ This is a Hunger Games fanfiction after all, so it will definitely have moments of violence, death and possibly self harm. **This is a fan-created work inspired by Suzanne Collins' "The Hunger Games" series. (REUPLOADED - deleted at 3k reads) Like all children in his world, 14-year-old Finnick Odair had the chance of being chosen for the Hunger Games. In a pool stock full of names, he was just as vulnerable as anyone from the ages of 12-18. And in District Four, which often tends to produce Career tributes, its residents could only hope that this year's pair would fall under that description. On Reaping day, a 14-year-old boy's name is called. A name that is often whispered down the hallways of the local high school, giggled at, fawned over. The gasps that arose afterwards were monumental. Him, of all people? It couldn't be, could it? Yet it was. At age 14, Finnick Odair was called forth to be a tribute in the 65th annual Hunger Games. Many stood there and thought, "He's just a pretty face. How could he possibly bring home the victor's crown?" However, some people are far more than a pretty face. In fact, it's even said that those with such captivating allure are most often the ones that can catch you off guard and bring you to your knees. __________________________ Excerpt: ❝25, 24, 23...❞ I can do this. I have the skills, the desire--I can win. It's possible. I know it's possible. The odds may be against me, against all of us, but one of us has to win. ❝15, 14, 13...❞ So to everyone in Four watching; to my mom, dad, and Annie Cresta, I'm making a promise to you. ❝7, 6, 5, 4...❞ Whatever happens here, I will fight like hell to come back home, ❝3, 2, 1...❞ I promise you.
