In an Empire of mythic power, The Empire of Cartes, lives a boy named Rane. He lives peacefully between his grandparent's cottage and his mother's house in Gray's City, and tries to get by and make a living for his family.
One day, on a day like any other, he is taken over by a mysterious magic, a magic that quickens his blood, strengthens his bones, and bestows him with godlike strength and speed.
Rane is just beginning to learn how to control his new power when he is attacked by his rival, who is a rich merchant's son and the nephew of the Bishop, a man of untold power and corruption. He is captured and his family taken by the Bishop, and must escape and set out to find the one man who can help him protect his mother and sister.
Bren, the son of a wizard, is learning how to control his powers, and has become adept very quickly in a short amount of time. Things are looking up for him when he crosses paths with a powerful sorcerer, a man who has decided to teach him the secrets of magic.
