"Breath, baby, breath." Flashing lights appear behind my closed eyelids. "C'mon Alice, breath!" I know the voice. It's my mother's. There's a rhythmic pressure on my chest, and a male voice counting, "One, two, three. One, two, three." The pulsing pressure continues, and I finally gasp in air as water is dispelled from my burning lungs. I can hear distantly my mother take a relieved sigh. Then it all goes black.

Broken

I close my eyes. I'm not going to die. I'm not going to die. Suddenly, I feel my stomach drop and my head start to spin. I try to scream, but nothing comes out. I try to breathe, but my mouth is dry. The sickening feeling continues for about a minute, then it stops. I open my eyes; I'm not dead... Yet.
