Calypso Nightshade is the lowest of the low - a captive of war, cursed for her father's crimes, her life slipping away in solitude. Her dearest wish, impossibly out of reach, is to love and be loved in return, and she has resigned herself to the knowledge that it will never come to be. But she was not always a prisoner.

When out of the blue she is chosen for Prince Leo Valdez's grand Selection, she is abruptly jerked from the relative safety she has known for the past few years and back into the spotlight of royalty. Being in the public eye is a dangerous thing when you have something to hide, but somehow, the annoying, immature prince makes it worth the struggles.

Just as both of them begin to question all they've ever known, a terrible incident occurs, and Calypso and Leo are hurled into its midst. It's up to them and them alone to save each other and their country.
