ONC#2019 Long List

The legends spoke of it, the myths whispered of it too; tales of a sword, forged in hope and wrought in despair, drawn out in light and quenched in darkness, made by a simple blacksmith, yet a blade so powerful that it could even destroy the Gods.

It is believed that the swordsman worthy of lifting this sword was a true warrior, one who would be rendered invincible. And those who survived the battles fought alongside this warrior, swore that they could hear the blade sing.

It was during the darkest battles, where the very existence of the world was threatened, that the blade would find its blade master, the warrior who would need it to fight the battle, to hope for a chance at victory. At least that is what was believed, for no battle seemed dire enough to have the blade appear in the last four thousand years.

Four thousand, one hundred and sixty five years after the last recorded tale of the battle, where the blade had appeared, sixteen year old Aindri, much to her shock and delight, discovers that the legends are true and the myths are facts. But then what the myths guarded was a fearsome secret; for the sword to be rendered powerful, it needed a sacrifice, a price to be paid, willingly...

The Before. There was a time before, a time of a great war, a time there were two kingdoms. War rampaged on the heels of jealousy bred by men's contemptuous hate and fueled by their desire to take what wasn't theirs. Two Kings fought wanting what the other had, holding the Bythe's fire at the tip of his knife The King of the South snuffed it out stealing with him the Jewel of the north. I am Bellary. I live with the tales of the before filling my dreams, and ringing in my ears, I am known as the Silent Princess of Loch. My voice was taken from me by force, an assassination failed. Left with the scars of my abusers to remind me and everyone daily. Haunted by nightmares, and faceless voices calling out to me I hide away in the walls of the castle, under the excuse that it's for my protection under the rule of my neurotic father and overprotective brother I have never tasted freedom. My father's constant fear that the men attacked me would be back to finish the job. I was insecure, maimed, and riddled with shame. The itch in my brain that I was missing something buzzed in my brain, there was a fire in my veins that called to be lit. With no words to speak I filled the void with the written word, I devoured the written word like a lioness hunting prey, and studying languages became my lover and I worshiped them passionately. Being a walking ghost among my kingdom, I heard words drifting on the wind, dripping from the walls and floating off of people like a permeating perfume. They were whispering warnings, the north was awakening, the north was angry, the north was coming. The north was seeking, the north was calling Ophelia home.

"Who's out there?" One of the men yelled. Of course only silence met them. I remained quiet and waited for the group to start moving again. "Maybe it was just an animal." Someone whispered. The person, who I assumed was the captain of the small squad, signaled for them to walk again. They clearly showed fear as they kept going; brandishing their weapons to guard themselves with. "Two are holding lanterns. I'll tell you when you're too close to them." I heard my friend whisper in my ear. I followed the men as I picked up another branch and waited for the right time to break it. They continued to walk through the forest, turning their heads in every direction as if an animal might lunge at them and rip their throats out. I guess in a way I was going to do that. "Go back a few feet." My friend whispered. I carefully distanced myself from the group and waited. "Where is she?" I quickly snapped the stick as soon as he finished asking the question. They stopped and two soldiers raised their lanterns to shine its light in the darkness. I quickly hid behind a tree before both of them turned where I was. A low frustrated growl came from one of the men, "The girl's playing with us. She's out here following our every move." How paranoia can cloud the mind. At nine years old, Silver decided to leave her village for the forest. Since then, she's been hunted; everyday is a fight for her life, every breath she takes could be her last, but she's determined to stay alive. Her life isn't the kind anyone would want to live but she's managed to survive this long so, what's a few more years?

Protagonists, the most important characters in stories. They're the ones that are supposed to save the world and be a symbol of hope for humanity, the ones that can defeat anything in their way if they want to, the ones whom the reader wants to win and succeed... ...Well atleast thats how a good heroic protagonist should be. I wrote 3 novels ever since I dropped out of college at 20 years old. My first novel was probably the worst novel to exist, bad characters, basic and repeated plot and a terribly unlikeable rude protagonist. Thankfully, the last 2 webnovels were a complete success! I was planning to retire from writing when suddenly i got hit by a car and woke up as someone i didn't recognize at all, but the worst part was that the school this body attended was the exact same school where the plot of my first novel took place, how crazy, right? Welp, i'm screwed huh? Being in the world with the dumbest and the most arrogant students ever isn't exactly a good thing to be in? Yes, i'm in my own novel, but why couldn't i have entered one of my more successful novels instead?? How annoying... I guess the only thing i could do now is try to stay as far away from the arrogant protagonists as possible, I am not trying to die today! But if only the soul of this body i'm currently possessing right now wasn't screaming at me non stop to "give their body back" as if I knew how to do that, and why is there a mini version of them sitting on my left shoulder while a mini version of how i looked in my past life is sitting on my right shoulder?? This doesn't make any sense...sigh.

In the timeless realm of Virdar, a secret lies buried beneath the scars of a forgotten war. Seven ancient giants, each embodying a primal element-Water, Air, Fire, Earth, Lightning, Ice, and Nature-were created to protect this mystical land. But a curse of unknown origin turned them into enemies, igniting a devastating conflict that reshaped the world forever. From the ashes of the giants' fall emerged the Deviants-beings of pure, destructive power-and the scattered remnants of their elemental hearts gave rise to seven mysterious amulets, each brimming with untold potential. These relics, whispered to hold the key to salvation or ruin, were entrusted to the newly created humans, who now live under their shadow. As the balance of Virdar falters once more, the heirs of the Grimwore, Fairytold, and Wright families uncover a chilling prophecy: the rise of the Deviants is only the beginning. Among the amulets lies one that should never have existed-the Amulet of Nature, hidden away by Hearsay, a celestial being whose forbidden creations carry a legacy that both binds and threatens the fate of all. When six chosen heirs set out to uncover the Amulet of Nature, they awaken forces beyond their comprehension. Betrayals, ancient truths, and celestial powers converge in a battle where even victory comes at a price. A single word, Evanescet, spoken by an enigmatic figure, alters the fabric of the realm, but the scars of war remain-a haunting reminder of what was lost. What secrets lie within the amulets? Who cursed the giants, and why? And what will the heirs discover about themselves and the fragile world they are sworn to protect? Mysteries abound, alliances crumble, and destinies are rewritten in this gripping tale of elemental power, hidden legacies, and the relentless pursuit of balance.
