As a crushing defeat looms over the horizon, Gaius Octavian desperately organizes his defenses. The Canim- large, bipedal wolves- have invaded the Western coast of Alera, seizing the city of Elincarch before sweeping across its hills and plains with deadly speed. The Canim had assaulted the Alerans with unexpected ruthlessness, unraveling the defender's campaign and forcing a retreat across the front. Outmanned and outmaneuvered, Tavi uses his tricks and cunning to keep his unit, the First Aleran Legion, from collapsing outright as the Canim gain ground. Their certain victory slips from their grasp, however, when an uninvited third party places themselves in the middle of the deadly conflict. In an instant, the Canim momentum is shattered, and Tavi seeks the help of the sudden arrival vast armies in finishing off the Canim. Instead of hope, Tavi finds an even more dangerous enemy that threatens the entire world, one that Tavi had hoped would never return.
