When a child witnesses something they should not have, they change in one of two ways, they become paranoid and withdrawn, and let what happened reduce them to shells, or they become stronger.
Kiyoi Akazaki chose the later. He swore never to become prey again, never become weak, or submissive.

This was kind of hard to do when he still looked like an adorable eight-year-old with rabbit ears.
