Tower

a dark twist on a modern fairytale | rapunzel reimagined.

"be grateful for youth, girl. you don't know what it means to lose it." she says, brushing out my hair with her hands. I turn around to look up at her.

"but mother, you are still so young and beautiful, I hope to look like you when I am old." I say. soon enough, her grip turns to steal, and I am pulled back roughly.

"darling, there is work to beauty. nothing about me has come about naturally. when you are older you will understand."

"understand what, mother?"

she brings me over to a tall mirror. standing behind me, she brushes my cheek with the palm of her hand.

"I wonder." she murmurs, "how it would be to have your skin instead of mine."
