Hiccup hadn't shot that dragon down, he had never won the dragon training, he never lost a leg and he had never made a single friend. His father's disappointment led Stoick and Hiccup's relationship to drift apart in the three years since Hiccup's last attempt to prove himself. Stoick's only way to keep Hiccup occupied without destroying the village and whatever reputation the boy held, was to give the scrawny boy hard task that Stoick says will prove his worth in the village and as Stoick's heir. But when word got around, others decided to make Hiccup's life worse and find ways for Hiccup to mess up. Hoping Stoick will take Hiccup's birthright away.
But Stoick's attention draws away from his abused son and onto a strange man who is offering a chance to save his village and rid of the cursing beast for good, but only if he complies to a new set of terms.

The name is given to those who won't survive their first winter. Those who don't belong, those who will not be any more than a burden. Hiccup isn't an exception to this. I mean, sure he survived his first winter, and the next fifteen. But he caused problems, not on purpose. Things just happened when he was around. First when he was six, and a nearby furnace blew up when he lost his temper. Then when he was eight, nine, eleven. These strange happenings kept occurring, and nothing he did helped. Everything he did, everything he tried had some way of turning back on him. For the longest time he believe that the God's cursed him. When things go sideways, when Toothless saves Hiccup, he has a choice, stay and try one last shot of convincing Berk, or flee with his best friend. He chooses the best option, he flees. Now, he is branded as a trator, a renegade. Stoick practically disowns him and he is never heard from again. five years later, Berk hears mighty tales of a grand hero who rides a night fury. Many call him 'Night Rider', 'Dragon Tamer', and 'Mysterious Rider'. Many doubted that this hero could be their traitorous ex heir to the Berkian leadership. After all, he was described as having a prosthetic leg, very tall, confident, and extremely buffed, while Hiccup was the opposite of all these descriptions.
