A 16-year-old girl named Ryder Cason lived in Sacramento, California for her whole life. When her parents are killed in a bank shooting, she's forced to move in with her uncle, who lives in the small town of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. Ryder is scared of other people due to the shooting, and doesn't talk to anyone, even her uncle. Her Uncle Charles turns out to be abusive and beats Ryder.
On the first day of school, Ryder meets 16-year-old Hunter Hayes. She ends up trusting him, and they become friends. Hunter gets suspicious about Ryder after he notices lots of cuts and bruises on her. Hunter saves Ryder from her uncle and his family takes care of her until she has to move in with her Aunt Kari in Nashville. Ryder ends up making a decision that could affect more lives than just her's. Will Hunter be able to save her? Will their friendship turn into something more? Or, will disaster strike and one of them will lose more than just the other?
