Tom lives in a universe in which the well-known creepypasta characters are seen to be myths or just scary stories, like ghosts. Some people believe they really exist although the majority of people do not. Believers usually only discussing their beliefs online. 

Tom soon discovers that not only do they exist but he isn't all that different to the people he once referred to as monsters.
