This was the only entry in the journal of Elizabeth Holden that was found. What happened after.. well.. that's what we are trying to figure out.

A family Christmas stay in La Loche seems to prove more boring than expected for Ed and Sally Anderson. That is until they learn of the town's latest visitor - one whose origin and identity are unknown, and so is his seemingly impossible ability to appear and vanish. As the two become further involved in the mystery, the more they realise that they are treading on dangerous matters, ones that some people want to keep under wraps any way they can. I entered this story into a novella writing competition in 2013 for which it was shortlisted. I had developed it from an intial 2,000-word concept into a 10,000-word story although at some point, I'd like to revisit it and work it into something more fully fleshed-out. To date, this is the last complete story I've written. I am uploading it here with next to no revisions from the last time I touched it back in the close of 2013.Complete

Ever since she could remember, the experiments had been part of her life. As a child, they were harmless-just puzzles and strange potions given to her by the woman she called Mother. Back then, she believed it was all a game, a way to make her smarter, stronger. But as she grew, the tests changed. They became invasive. Painful. Helen's Story
Helen is an older woman who is shattered when her husband Ronald disappears without a word one night. The police have no leads, and her children are adults who have moved away, leaving her to deal with her trauma on her own. She waits by the phone every day hoping for news and keeps the house spotless for when Ronald comes back. It's what he would expect of her. She knew better than to disappoint him. One year after his disappearance, strange things begin to happen in her house. Are the horrors she is seeing real, or is she losing her mind? Her daughter wants her to see a psychiatrist, but her thoughts are so jumbled she can't keep track of her appointments. She's been confused for so long, she doesn't know what reality is anymore. When the neighbours start to witness the horrors, though, it becomes clear that something evil is coming for Helen. What happened to Ronald, and what does the evil invading her house want from Helen?
