Great Expectations is written in the genre of "bildungsroman" or the style of book that follows the story of a man or woman in their quest for maturity, usually starting from childhood and ending in the main character's eventual adulthood. Great Expectations is the story of the orphan Pip, writing his life from his early days of childhood until adulthood and trying to be a gentleman along the way. The story can also be considered semi-autobiographical of Dickens, like much of his work, drawing on his experiences of life and people.

Thomas Shelby never thought he would fall in love with a whore. In the bustling streets of 1920s Birmingham, Alicent, a prostitute since her teenage years, with her irresistible charm, had only one goal : to make money. Every encounter was a transaction, a way to survive in a ruthless world. When their paths crossed, she saw him as just another client. However, over time, something unexpected happened. Behind his hardened exterior, he began to feel drawn to her, though he tried hard not to show it. As they fought their own inner demons, they had to face the decision of whether they were willing to risk everything for a love that could either save them... or destroy them.
