In the summer of 1917, four best friends decide to fight in the Great War, a war which will cause changes in the very fabric of society in just four years. This story is primarily narrated by Brian May, an intelligent, well-off student living in London with his friends. There's Roger, whose home life is less than exceptional, Freddie, whose motives, thoughts, and reasoning tends to elude everyone around him, and Freddie's little brother, John, who understands Freddie more than anyone else, even if it's still just barely. He's the quieter out of them all, and perhaps the most sensible. They go out to the frontline, where waiting in the trenches may be more than they can handle.
