Link did all he had to do. He defeated Calamity Ganon he activated and completed all the shrines. He was done. However when Princess Zelda perishes after the battle with Ganon she has one clear dying request: Link has to be the next ruler of Hyrule.

A war begins to brew between Goron and Zora. This was merely the start of how Hyrule began falling apart.
