Carter slowly walked towards me, butterflies swarming in my stomach, filling every inch of me. "Assi." he grabbed my wrists, and made me look at him. "Who was that song about?" "You know who." They've known each other since they were eleven, inseparable best friends for as long as they can remember, but long distance and spotty behavior causes them to lose touch after graduation. When Maddie and Harry run into each other again ten years later, what happens when feelings that were pushed away begin to resurface? EXCERPT: "How about this..." He suddenly gets an idea, a bold one, but he can't help but share it. "If neither of us are married by thirty, let's get married." Obviously, she'll be married by thirty. She's perfect, and any man who's as dense as a rock could see it. Surely, someone will sweep her off her feet and put a ring on her finger in the next twelve years, it's inevitable with the type of person she is. Deep down he wants it to be him, but he wouldn't dare make a move that could ruin the strongest friendship he's had his entire life. Maddie finds herself smiling at Harry's idea, she loves it. It won't happen though, because some girl in the future is bound to fall in love with Harry and his kind heart, and he'll be head over heels for her too. It's inevitable that someone will fall in love with his dimpled smile and caring soul, and even though Maddie already has, she wouldn't dare make a move that could ruin the strongest friendship she's had her entire life. They said heaven was the right kind of crowded, and dusty, and soft. They said it would smell of roses and clouds, they said it would melt every part of my body into one. They called heaven beautiful, they called it enough. They said the glass in heaven's windows would be thick, coloured, and like a lens through which you saw the world. They said I would be a being of light, they called the writings we were to make beautiful. The people that said this spent millennia trying to chase the feeling of sweet tenderness, but they chased it in things that were never meant to be more than sculptures and scriptures. They didn't say heaven would feel so... homely.

Shakespeare's Macbeth was in my syllabus when I was in secondary school. But Macbeth was just an appetiser, for I went on to get the complete works of his. But it was as I was reading his sonnets that I tried to mimic his 14-line poems. The rest is history. I did not read Shakespeare; I encountered him. In my "mimicking" of his sonnets, I learnt that a word could be stretched from its primary meaning to other "shades" of meaning. Poetry to me is like a pilgrimage, a path of mystery, a ritual that can transport the poet from where he is to where the subject of his writing is, where he achieves a lived experience. I deliberately chose a rhyming scheme of AABB CDCD EEFF GG, with which I wish to import an African voice into the sacred art of sonnet writing.
