Maximus is 23, he's the Alpha's son. Not only does he not have a mate, he has yet to take over the Ookami pack. To make matters worse he doesn't exactly make the cut when it comes to how an alpha is supposed to act.
After the disappearance of not only his father but all the Alpha's and Luna's of the neighboring packs Maximus has to not only battle a mysterious 'true and devine' pack but he must also battle the doubt within himself.
