Lotus Flower that bloomed out of Muddy water

My mother used to call me and my sibling the Lotus flowers that grew out of muddy water. I always wondered why she would call us that, that's when I started to do my own research. I was very intrigued by what I found, that's when I connected the koi fish to the lotus flower, representing pain, struggle, and growth. Despite being in a muddy pond they prevail to become beautiful, at a point in time everybody will face the current but is up to you to swim against it or be motionless.
