Evan Hansen has been anxiety ridden since his father left. His mother did her best, trying to keep him hopeful. The only thing that kept him going was his soulmate. He would get little messages on his arm each morning, telling him it would be alright, he wasn't alone, to keep going. So he would try. Emphasis on try, after the tree.
Connor Murphy was broken, to say the least. His sister never talked to him (they fell apart and he felt it was his fault), his father didn't understand why he was depressed (he should be happy, right?), and his mother did her best to fix him. The only thing that kept him going was his soulmate. He wrote little messages on his arm, reminding the both of them to keep going. His soulmate always drew a little tree next to the messages. Connor was always confused and happy after he received these. So he would try to go on. Emphasis on try, after the pain that indicated his soulmate was hurt.
(To avoid confusion, soulmates can feel each other's physical pain. If they write on their skin, it will appear on the other's in the same place.)
