Artemis Gentry had lived with a spectre in her periphery for nearly eleven years. At first, she did not name the spectre for she did not know what it was. Then she did not name it because she did not want the spectre to become a physical thing. But at fourteen she discovered that naming the spectre would make it a physical thing that she could destroy and so Artemis Gentry named the spectre Depression. But at eighteen, Artemis fell victim to depression and took her own life in a desperate attempt to find her family in the land of the dead, Inferis.

Artemis wakes up in Inferis only to be told that before she can see her family she must prove her worth by completing a series of tasks. With the help of a Star, a Hunter, an Undying Flame and the Righteous Murderer
