The Medal of Honor. The Silver Star. The Global War on Terrorism Medal. David "Solid Snake" Doe has been awarded them all for his service to the United States of America and United Nations. But one night will change this distinguished veteran's retirement forever.

Eight years after completing the task of capturing the international terrorists Militaires Sans Frontières' leader Eli "Liquid Snake" Bishop, David's brother, David has enjoyed the civilian life with his wife, adopted daughter, and son in the wilderness of Alaska, but it is time to rejoin David's former unit as a plot is revealed to steal prototype military weapons aboard the first of a new breed of public airfare, the Aviannova: the world's largest passenger plane, as well as a mobile air fortress for the United States Army.

Reclaiming his long-abandoned callsign as Solid Snake, David must juggle battling an outnumbering terrorist force, protecting terrified civilians, and simply keeping the Aviannova out of the Atlantic Ocean as he tries to keep the prototype in its hangar, and take down the so-called "Diamond Dog".
