Both Queen Abhorsen and King of the Old Kingdom have passed, their rule passed onto Queen Ellimere and the Royal Wallmaker Sameth. The title of Abhorsen is passed onto that of the Abhorsen-in-waiting, Lirael.
But what happens when The Eight Brine Shiner returns? And with him, the new, supposed "Abhorsen-In-Waiting" and apparently, the wielder of an eight bell. Yrael's Bell? Is this new Abhorsen-In-Waiting the servant of Yrael, or has Yrael once again been bound? For a greater danger and more destructive presence is coming forth, and it comes beyond the Great Rift of Orannis. And it comes with might and fury never matched before!

Some say that everyone's fate is already determined. If that's the case, Estelle Marzena is greatly disappointed with hers. Her greatest dream is to participate in the Illyrian Blood Rite and become a Carynthian warrior, like so many in her family. She has been training for the Rite her entire life, and yet, she continues to be told that she isn't ready. Estelle must find a way to prove her skills to her mentors so that she can prove her skills to the world, and she might have unwittingly stumbled across a way to do that.
