Prince Roman of the Ironfelt Kingdom is well known for being a heroic, flirtatious man. Everyone respects him, and sees him as a mighty hero, however as much of a hero he is, he's lonely. A different take on the sides being various impulses/ways of thinking, and fusing together to form the different parts of Thomas' personality. Virgil keeps his past to himself out of fear and guilt.
