In the town of Forbiddance, no one is allowed out past six in the afternoon and cannot come out of their homes before seven in the morning. The woods, skies, lakes, seas, everything is forbidden.
Listay Tazren, a teenage girl in Forbiddance, wishes to leave. But there are rules. And the only time she would be able to escape is at night. Any other time, the cobbled walkways are bustling and filled with people. An two years ago, people went missing when they traveled to the woods.
She works at the Ruling House, where documents of the rules are kept with her only two friends. Rulette and Nearsha. When she tells them she wants to try to escape, the stop speaking to her. She must be crazy.
Sian, a snobby girl from the eastern part of town, also wishes to leave. But her rich family won't allow it. One day, she overhears Listay talking about it to herself and Sian decides to mention something. But not face-to-face, she can't be seen with a poor girl like Listay. So she hides a note in the frame of Listay's window.
Asher, Listay's brother, finds this note instead.
