Usbek est un sultan persan, fou amoureux de Roxane. Cette dernière est obligée de l'épouser et de séjourner dans le sérail réservé aux épouses d'Usbek. Quelques temps plus part, le sultan voyage pour Paris où les comportements libertins des françaises le dégoute. Dans sa solitude il decide d'écrire une lettre à Roxane, pour lui rappeler qu'il est son maitre et son mari. Mais il n'est pas certain que Roxane lui est complètement soumise et qu'elle est heureuse dans son sérail.
