Ten years ago, a six-year-old Elsa Pearl is discovered soaked and abandoned on a rocky beach in Maine, her bony arms clutched around her dying toddler sister. In the decade that follows, the raven-haired Elsa Pearl finds herself both an outcast and a ward of social services, being raised under the abusive hand of the rotten Mrs. Fundy, alongside her sister, Jenny (basically, things are awful) in a town seeped in superstition. All the while Elsa is haunted by the dream of an island surrounded by the sea and guarded by water fairies-a dream that she swears is real.

When Elsa's sister is dragged off by an eerie duo claiming to be social services, Elsa becomes desperate. So when the mysterious (and heavily bejewelled) Whyte appears at her doorstep claiming to have known her parents, Elsa jumps at the chance to find not only her missing sister, but her family.

Within moments of her escape, a determined Elsa finds herself aboard a ship set sail for Triton, a remote island riddled with creatures that Elsa has only ever read about, serving as a refugee camp for the outcasts of a magical world. She quickly learns that the other inhabitants on the island are different-and that the land, like the ocean, is plagued with a darkness lurking just below the surface. It isn't long before Elsa figures out that she is different, one of the last surviving members of a rare race of beings that are of both siren and sorceress descent.

As Elsa searches for her sister, she finds herself immersed in the struggle to keep the land of Triton safe from the evil forces under the power of the genocidal sea-king Magnus, who is hard at work on a plan to wipe out magical folk for good.

A survivalist at heart, Elsa finds her footing as a leader in her quest to unite not only her family, but an entire world.
