When they have more darkness and pain the monster has before death, they have more power as demons and their tails are longer. An angel and demon being together meant that the demon is tricking and manipulating the angel. Papyrus became an angel after being sliced by the human, and Sans turned into a demon for his soul was full of anger, hate, vengeance, and regret.
