I watched her as she slept. Her breathing was regulated, her chest moving up and down in a pattern of slow pants. Her brown hair covered her eyes and I had to resist the urge to brush it back.
The night would soon erupt into chaos.
Lights would be flickering
Darkness would become flashing light
The world we once knew would be tinged with darkness
A darkness that no knew existed.

All I could hear was the frantic thrumming of my heartbeat against my chest. The alarm sirens were a light humming in the background. My limbs were shaking from exhaustion, including the extra limbs protruding from my back. My breath came out rapidly but, I couldn't seem to get enough oxygen to my lungs. Crossing Into Forever
In the darkness of her dreams, she saw herself standing at a window looking down below, only to see a misting, swirling fog. She could not see the ground and did not know how far down it was. She had no idea where she was. Soon after, she was led down a dark hallway to a room with a large altar. She felt herself being lifted up and then placed back down on the hard stone surface. Now all she could see was a large man, holding a knife in his hands, with the sharp edge pointed directly over her heart...Then a different man with deep blue eyes was looking down at her, and his hand was caressing her face, telling her everything was going to be ok. A loud bang on the door made her startle and rise up. There, coming through the door, were several large angry men, dressed strangely in what looked like animal furs and carrying ominous looking weapons. Some had clubs with sharp objects attached to the ends and others had sharp axes and swords. She could hear her own screams escaping from her lips, and she opened her eyes to notice she was lying in her bed in the safety of her room in the convent where she lived. She was still trembling and had to tell herself it was just a dream. She was safe and no one would ever be able to hurt her.Complete

The city hums in the dead of night, a low, mechanical heartbeat that never stops. The streets are cracked, washed in neon and rain, and somewhere in the mess of it all is Elysia-slipping between the cracks, watching the world through the streaked glass of a bus window. She exists, nothing more. Drifting through the days, numb to the bruises that never quite fade, to the weight pressing in around her. The past is a locked door, buried under dust and silence. But doors don't stay shut forever. Something is shifting. The air feels heavier. Shadows stretch longer. And lately, she isn't as alone as she used to be. There's the man who lingers in the dark, his presence still and measured, like he's watching, waiting. Then there's the woman-who moves like the night itself, slipping in and out of her periphery, leaving behind a whisper of something just out of reach. They aren't normal. She knows that much. Sometimes she catches glimpses-eyes that reflect light like an animal's, movement too fluid, too unnatural. Sometimes she hears them when no one should be there at all. Two figures. Two ghosts. One walking too close, the other never close enough. And the wolves at the door aren't just knocking. They're waiting for her to open it.
