On the night of the Kyubi attack, the Shinigami sees a vision of the future. Determined to change it, Shinigami goes against Lady Fate's plans and gives young Naruto two gifts and a promise. 

He bestowed upon young Naruto the gift of the spirit eyes, Minato's soul and the promise of eternal protection. 

Not long after the Shinigami left, Hagoromo Otsutsuki appeared and sealed himself into the young one, not yet knowing of the Shinigami's faith in the boy.
