History
Lefkada owes its name to the white rocks, which characterize the southern part of the island, the Lefkata cape. The name was given first to the old town of Lefkada and then to the whole island. According to mythology, the poet Sappho sailed from these white rocks to the sea because she could not endure her love for Phaon.
