The Woman Called Bear

Bear has known nothing but her tribe, nestled deep in the mountain woods away from any and all other human contact. But during the celebration of her fifth winter, the odd fellows came, with howling death machines of metal and spark. Her family fled. Her mother and very young brother never survived the mountain's cruelty. But Bear survived. Bear was strong. And she had to be stronger still when her father dragged her across the continent, through scorching cities and landscapes unlike anything she had ever seen; and stronger still, when they odd fellows came again and took her father away. And strongest yet, when the woman called Bear learned the truth and lost the man she loved the most.
