Following a natural disaster that shook the world, the only safe place for the remaining humans to live comfortably on earth is New Haven. A protected and highly fortified city the size of a small country that imitates natural occurrences. However, this "Utopia" is not at all perfect. Poverty, unemployment and corruption are normality, and little is done to help. Remaining government officials have split into factions, fighting for supremacy, shoving the former problems into a little corner of the city aptly named "The Slums".

Two orphaned siblings, An small innocent little girl with a strange preference to snack foods and a snarky adolescent with trust issues, are thrown into this harsh environment trying to find the rest of their family while trying to dodge, Slum gangs and Government factions that would use them for their...abilities.

The skies, the earth, the things we love, everything is devoured by this merciless transformation. Forests turn into oceans, deserts into dense jungles, and what was once home yesterday is nothing but a shadow today. In this world, constantly dragging us into the abyss, I have only one purpose: to protect my little brother. He can't see how often I cry at night, how often the fear eats away at me. The shadows are the worst. They come from the darkness, they hunt, they consume. I've seen things I'll never be able to forget. But as long as I'm breathing, I'll keep fighting. For him. For us. This world wants to tear us apart, but it will never succeed. Not as long as I'm here."

Citizens over thirty grow old and are forced to mine the mineral that powers giant cooling stations to keep the planet habitable. Citizens solve disputes with gladiatorial combat. The prophesy of The Coming In Saffire's time of greatest need, a child will be born to a special woman, the Gravidarum. The child, who has no father of this planet, will be known as the Unum, a child to lead Saffire. The Helper will battle to keep the Gravidarum safe until the Unum is born. The people of Saffire have been waiting to see The Coming fulfilled. Demalynn assembles a group of clackers to get her home, the most important of which is a fellow clacker: eighteen-year-old Aiden. It is not long before Jago, the ruler of Saffire, learns that a woman on Saffire is pregnant and he unleashes all his power to prevent the birth. Jago will not give up power. Demalynn is surprised to find out she is the Helper, but is astounded to learn the identity of the Gravidarum. Demalynn must battle to stay alive and fumbles towards the realization that Aiden is much more than a close friend.
