When the three Marshall brothers' Boy Scout leader suggested the boys participate in a none-required service project, they are sent to the foster care center to see if they could be of any help. They were asked if they would like to spend time with a kid and act as a older sibling or mentor for the child. The boys agreed, expecting the best. But what happens when they find out this child is a 13-year-old girl? Will they leave her behind or will she finally receive the love and support from a family that she has been lacking for so long?

A story about 14 year old Randall Clarkson/Gardiner, the adopted son of Thomas and Alice Gardiner, and of how they took in another foster child, Ester...only to have her taken away, at aged 4, when Randall's unfinished papers cause her to be matched into another family. Randall struggles with feelings of guilt, as well as the overall grief of losing his beloved sister. When a chance appears which might allow them to keep her, after all, will they succeed? And if they fail, would they be able to recover from the loss, without any bitterness afterwards? Would they still want to adopt children, in spite of the risk of pain?
