La historia se desarrolla en pleno auge de la época victoriana, Marinette Du Pain es hija de los exitosos burgueses Tom Dupain y Sabine Cheng, quienes a su vez son amigos de los aristócratas Gabrielle Agreste y Emilie Agreste. El hijo de este matrimonio, Adrien Agreste, es el mejor amigo y compañero de aventuras de la pequeña Marinette. Para ambos niños, la vida transcurre tranquila, hasta que ocurre una terrible tragedia...Tras un fatídico accidente, el matrimonio Agreste pierde a su amado hijo.
