Two black sisters Bre and Normani is living in the hood of East Cleveland, Ohio. They've been brought up from the trenches or 'the underground." There they're surrounded by poverty, drugs, and gangs. Normani has a dream that doesn't seem like its coming true. Bre just wants to live but hasn't been doing much living. Yet, they still have their friends, each other, and family to keep their heads up high. At least they used to have family.
After, the tragic death of their parents it just seems like everything has been going down hill. They was separated and put into the system, but then their aunt Key'Ana had gotten custody of them. They had to live with their aunt and two cousins.
Things was actually starting to lighten up despite the fact that they were now broke and didn't have any parents. At least they felt safe and could smile and even laugh. However, that feeling didn't last for long when Keyanna had decided to get a new boyfriend and bring him into the picture.
After, realizing what her new boyfriend was doing to her eldest niece she kicked him out, but was fueled with anger. Key'Ana decided to take her anger out on Normani and Bre beating and starving them whenever she had gotten the chance. Of course her sons would try to help but they were just afraid of Key'Ana as the sisters were.
One day the sisters were so hungry they went to go steal from the nearest convenient store. They were arrested, but charges was dropped, however they were taken back into the system. Instead of being put into a group home it was a foster home, with a lovely lady named Tasha who was new at being a mother.
With Tasha, Normani and Bre has to teach her how to be a mother while learning the new ways of their own life. They have to adjust to a new life, and new school. They will meet new friends and lose family while gaining some as well. While starting new lives secrets from the past will still follow. This is their journey in The Underground.
