Queen Elizabeth the second is killed in a massive terrorist attack on Westminster Abby, along with many other members of the Royal Family and most of the British government, the leaders of numerous Empire & Commonwealth realms, as well as many other world leaders.  

In the aftermath, a "National Emergency Government" is formed; which becomes increasingly authoritarian.  The investigation leads to Irish Republicans, with ties to the Republic of Ireland, and the USSR.  

In the course of trials, treason, martial law, oppression, Resistance, & the question of the succession to the throne of Britain & the future of the United Kingdom, the people of Britain struggle to find their way...
