The dark side of the mind palace is completely different than what Thomas thinks. Virgil is trapped into the dark side of the mind palace until Thomas hits 14. When he suddenly shows up on the bright side of the mind palace he is confused and scared he's worried about deceit trying to cone and take him back into the dark side.
