Rachel panted, trying to control herself as waves of pain spread through her collar bone. A tear streaked her cheek, but she viciously wiped it away before it could hit the ground. She wasn't going to cry. She pushed herself up, holding her bleeding shoulder as she looked off to where it had gone.

Don't worry, she assured herself, you'll never have to see it again.

Other than the fact that her dad is a cryptid tracker for the government, Rachel's life is pretty normal. She goes to high school, has a friend, baby-sits every Saturday, plays the cello... Pretty normal. But one night when her dad gets attacked by two cryptids who have been known to kill, she swears to avenge him. She captures one of them, but in the end lets it go.

Rachel's not too sure why, but she finds it and starts taking care of it, trying to nurse its broken leg back to health while also trying to find and appease the other. Now with two cryptids on her hands as well as a toxic relationship, her only friend that is drifting apart, and a strange bond with one of the creatures that just keeps growing, she must try to protect the cryptids as well as keep her sanity. 

Maybe they aren't as bad as everyone says.

Whether they can save the world depends on whether they can survive themselves. Mature rating for blood, gore and depictions of violence. TW: mentions of drunkards and beer, mention of physical abuses, a description of trypophobia, claustrophobia, and other phobias, and descriptions of nasty cryptids. There is no depictions or allusions of sex, no f-bombs, or drug abuse. This story was started when I was in seventh grade. I finished the original when I was a senior in high school. Displeased with the finished product, I began to rewrite it here, starting June 2015, then again in 2020. I am quite satisfied with the result, and am sure this will be the final edition. This isn't the first book of the series, but there's no spoilers for 'The World is Larger than it Seems', so you can start on this one. The story is far from finished, however, and I hope to eventually finish the series.
