In a world when people are born, they have a streak of hair the same color and texture as their soulmate's natural hair. Xerxes ( Zer-xes ) is born with a silver streak that floats in the air, and no matter what he does he can't get it to lay flat on his head.

Ian, a merman is born with a streak of light yellow that just stays in place, and no matter how much ian tries to get it to flow freely in the water he can't.

Xerxes goes to many hair salons, and psychics, to try to get that hair down, but they were all a lost cause. Until finally he goes to a psychic about 71 yo named Lyra sirener. She claims to be a half siren half human. Now Xerxes doesn't believe in Sirens or Mermaids, after Lyra tells him that he's a merman well half that is. He doesn't believe it so he leaves, but it sticks to him.
