A compelling story that documents the experiences of five college sophomores: Jewel, Shaun, Dirk, Lavender, and Coba. This story explores the modern social and racial complexities of being black in higher education. With the illustrious predominantly white institute (PWI), Carnie University and the distinguished historically black college (HBCU) Nickelson College as their stages, this group of friends battles racial oppression, overcoming self doubt, and claiming self reliance as they search for their own meanings of black American Exceptionalism, black classism, and most importantly, Hip-Hop as our inheritance through their respective callings.

"This is our beginning; you placed your fingertips on my heart and ignited something profound. I looked at you and caught a glimpse of forever. This was the birth of us, but it was also the destruction. This is how we came to be..." A.Y An overbearing father, a secret crush, and a habitual rule-breaker... what could possibly go wrong? My name is Sidney Stansfield and I am a reformed rebel. Or at least I'm trying to be. And this year is going to be different because I have it all figured out. My grades will be perfect, I'll be taking my school to the state championship, and I'm determined to leave my rebellious ways behind. Hell... I'll do anything to escape the nightmare known as the Candor reform school for girls. That is, unless my mouth and my temper get in the way. My good girl plans are put to the test as I navigate through high school, bullies, an overbearing father, basketball, and temptations of the heart. A forbidden fruit otherwise known as my childhood best friend Drew Taylor. And as I catch feelings for the school's resident bad boy, I wonder if I will be able to pull off my greatest feat yet... or will the perfect life I've been trying to make for myself come crashing down around me? Unable to resist the dark side of things, I'm praying I don't lose my freedom a second time, and that I'll finally succeed in this game called life. PLEASE READ FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORE YEAR FIRST! To get a rainbow, you must go through rainstorms, and they saw a multitude of precipitation. Just before the sun could come out, the dark clouds had to clear up first. Instead, they grew larger. Completely free from college and doing his own thing, Shai Carter was heading down a smooth road of comfortability. He had his AAU team up and running, and his players were elite. He was the manager at the YMCA and was helping his community every chance that he could. Family was long gone and he didn't have to deal with their drama. He had a stunning wife who he loved dearly and a baby on the way. Things seemed to be going wonderful, as he wanted, until it wasn't. He was supposed to be in San Francisco playing for the Warriors but he wasn't ready for the commitment. To make matters worse, his past was making a wrap around to throw him off course. He was at the point where nothing could get under his skin, but the rain was still unbearable. Even the bad storms that refused to stop. From birth, her life had been nothing other than rainbows and sunshines. She had her slight storm and the rain poured every now and then. But there were still some clouds lingering around through her day with droplets of rain. Entering her junior year of college, Dess had finally found the appropriate time to get her life on track. Healed from the passing of her father, her journey to new beginnings was on. She was working, had a wonderful and caring husband, and a baby. Everything was just as good as it was before even with the slight changes in precipitation every now and then. But would it stay that way? A lingering question sheshe to deal with while the thunderstorms and tornadoes came her way. And as for Shamar, his life has been sunny days and rainbows. He had everything he needed from millions in his pockets to half-naked girls in his home. Yet, he wanted one thing more than others; Shai. His happiness. His joy. And his life. 08/24-
