Bitter snow falls on a hot summer day.
In Salem, Virginia, 19-year-old Rose stands at the door to the pet shop where she works and watches the people outside go mad in a frenzy of blood and violence. Not too far away, 11-year-old Elijah, who has ever only known love and kindness from his mother, hides in a closet as the woman who used to sing him to sleep rages through their apartment in a crazed fury.
Reality is unraveling.
A plane is swallowed by a living cloud. A truck driver on a lonely road disappears into nothingness. A family is swarmed by strange, unnatural creatures.

Sweat trailed down her back as she ran with all her might. Blood slowly flowed out the long cut in her thigh. Loud snarls could be heard from behind her as the inhuman beings chased her with unimaginable speed. She couldn't scream, she was afraid and no one could help her. All she could do was cry.
