Archeia's Atheneum (The First Shift)
You're awake. You're different. You exist, suddenly, as two things. You, the one you know, with the body and name you're familiar with--and this new you, the one exists within you. This you is inhabiting a world within your own. This other consciousness that you see through has begun to sense its timeline, each word a moment. Like the you you're familiar with, this self seems to come into its life mid-story--though the way you experience this life/story differs vastly from what you're used to. As you grow you will eventually know how to articulate it, even recreate it. First, however, you must choose to embark on/in this small incarnation; you must read the first word. The Backrooms: Essence of Desolation
Once, the world still meant something. People weren't hollow strangers, trust wasn't a cruel illusion, and freedom flowed as freely as water. Now drinkable water is scarce-and freedom even scarcer. Every step forward costs more than I can give, yet I keep moving, even when surrendering to the endless night would be easier. Why do I keep pressing on through these familiar alleys and shadowed corridors, where only death or desolation waits? Why am I carving these words into the crumbling face of an old concrete wall? When did my hand turn black? And how long ago did it become too late to turn back? ---------------------------- Yoooooo! What's up liminal lovers and clinical schizos! What dreams are made of.. The answer seems to escape him, as his sleep patterns are going through unforeseen changes. Grasping at straws, getting stuck in those webs of the dream state, he desperately tries to navigate his way out of. But how come, no matter how hard he tries, he still can't identify the catalyst for such a radical shift that has sent his equilibrium into a spiral? When a disillusioned young man meets a stranger in his dreams, he discovers that the world behind sleep is real - and dangerous. - A man who lives in self-dejection and daydreams of the grandeur of being a successful writer, Bartholomew struggles with self-acceptance and all the pangs of existence. One night, his consciousness descends into the dreamworld, allowing him to experience his dreams as one would in reality. But when Inoue, a fellow Dreamshaper, explains his latent abilities, he finds out about the wildness the unconscious world holds and its mental and metaphysical effects. Inoue spontaneously decides to mentor him, introducing him to Mind Eaters - beings born from the amalgamation of repressed trauma, encompassing stress and griping depression - and the community that exists for their kind. During this, their relationship blooms, and they develop romantic feelings for one another. With his newfound powers and friends, Bartholomew slowly finds the strength and drive to come out of his shell and progress his writing journey - but this is derailed when he encounters a Dreamshaper who uses his abilities to cause harm, as well as old acquaintances that were splinters of pain he hadn't been able to remove.
